Registering a dedicated local phone number for texting
It is recommended that you first register your texting brand and campaign in Twilio before proceeding with the steps outlined below to register a local phone number.
Once you have registered your A2P brand and campaign, the next step is to purchase a phone number from Twilio that you will associate with your A2P 10DLC campaign and messaging service.
To begin, use the left navigation panel to go to Messaging > Regulatory Compliance > Campaigns. Click on the Register Phone Numbers step, then click buy a new phone number here.
You will then be redirected to the Buy a Number page in your Twilio console. The Buy a Number page can also be found by navigating to Phone Numbers > Manage > Buy a number in the left navigation panel.
On the Buy a Number page, you can use the search criteria to find and purchase a number in your local area code. e.g., If your local area code is "701", set the Search criteria box to Number, then type "701" into the search field.
You may scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Refresh results until you locate a number you prefer to use. Once you find the number you want to use for your texting campaign, click Buy.
Buying a phone number will incur an immediate fee as well as a monthly phone number fee, both of which are typically around $1.
If your A2P 10DLC registration is complete, the next step is to configure the number to be used with your messaging service.
If your A2P 10DLC registration is not yet complete / approved, you must wait until it is approved.
How to connect your Twilio phone number to your messaging service
To verify whether your phone number is connected to your messaging service, follow these steps:
1 - Using the left navigation menu, go to Messaging > Regulatory Compliance > Campaigns.
2 - Locate your A2P Campaign on the page, find the Connected Messaging Service and click on it.
3 - You will then be redirected to the Sender Pool page.
If your number is associated with your campaign's messaging service, it will be listed on this page. No further action is required.
If your number is not associated with your campaign's messaging service, click Add Senders to add your number to the messaging service.
- In the Sender Type dropdown, select Phone Number, then click Continue.
- Select a phone number you've purchased and click Add Phone Numbers. If you don't yet have a phone number, click Buy more numbers.
Once you have:
- Registered your Brand with Twilio
- Registered an A2P Campaign for texting
- Purchased a phone number and connected it to the Messaging Service assoicated with your A2P Campaign (as described above)
You are ready to Turn on text messaging in Connect by entering your Twilio account details!
