Using an Authenticator App for 2FA

Setting up two factor authentication helps to keep your account safe, but it also means an extra step when logging in to your eCatholic account. Use these instructions if you choose to use an authenticator app on your cell phone or an extension on your browser.

Using an authenticator app on your cell phone

To set up 2FA via authenticator app, click the Authenticator App button on the Enable 2FA security screen.

Use your authenticator app on your cell phone at the eCatholic 2FA step

  1. Open your authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator) and refer to your authenticator's directions for setting up a new account via QR code.
  2. Scan the QR code shown on the Add Authenticator App screen, then click Next.
  3. Verify your authenticator app by entering the 6-digit authentication code from the authenticator app.
  4. Click Submit.

Using an authenticator extension on your browser

Download an authenticator extension and add it to your browser following the App's directions.

Here are a few options we liked:

  • For Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browsers: Authenticator extension
  • For Safari browser and Mac desktop: Step Two app and extension

Once you have installed the extension, you can set it up to use with your eCatholic products during the 2FA process. When you get to the step to set up 2FA, follow these steps below. You begin Step One when you see the Add Authenticator App pop-up.

Using the Browser Extension

  1. Press the Authenticator icon in your toolbar (or find it in your browser's extension manager).

  2. Press the Pencil icon to edit the list of authenticator connections.

  3. Press the + (plus sign) to create a new connection.

  4. Select the Manual Entry button.

  5. In the Issuer field, type eCatholic ID.

  6. And in the Secret field, paste the Set Up Key provided by the eCatholic 2FA step:

  7. After you finish the Authenticator setup to connect to eCatholic, you will see an entry that looks similar to this.

  8. Use the 6-digit code to enter into the eCatholic 2FA boxes.
  9. Check the box for Remember this Device so that you will not be prompted for the 2FA code for 30 days.

You should now be successfully logged into your eCatholic product.

The Importance of 2FA recovery (backup) codes

After you've successfully set up 2FA for your account with an authenticator app/extension, you will be given a set of 2FA recovery (backup) codes. You'll need these backup codes if you ever lose access to the device you use for 2FA. It is critical to securely store the backup codes in a place you can readily access.
If you do lose access to the device you use for 2FA, you may enter one of your backup codes on the eCatholic 2FA security code screen to gain access to your account/product. Once you are logged in with a backup code, you should reconfigure the 2FA method for your account. Refer to this help article for how to do that: How to edit the 2FA method for your account.
